Vickers sees red

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester's frustrating away form reached boiling point on Saturday when Ashley Vickers was sent-off after squaring up to team-mate Mark Jermyn.

The Magpies, who have not picked up a point away from the Jewson Stadium this season, were always struggling after going down to 10-men at Woodside Park.

Visiting boss Roy O’Brien surprisingly called in keeper Regan Coward for the Blue Square South clash to replace Ryan Northmore, after the youngster was expected to play for Bridport in their FA Vase clash at Newquay.

However, he could not prevent the county town outfit from suffering their sixth away defeat of the season.

Stortford had the first chance on goal with a well-worked move.

Ashley Nicholls’ crossed for striker Charlie Sheringham, who held the ball up well and found Ben Bowditch who forced a great save from Coward.

Jamie Gleeson and Ryan Moss linked up well several times in the first half for the visitors, with the former delivering good balls in to the Stortford box.

However, Dorchester were caught on the hop on 26 minutes when they conceded the first goal.

Bowditch chested down a ball that the Magpies thought was going out. He then surged up the left wing and put in a fine cross across goal which Sheringham controlled and slotted home.

The hosts continued to play flowing football and worked themselves in to several more scoring opportunities with Sheringham again coming closest with an effort that just sailed over the bar.

Despite being a goal down, Dorchester were still in with a shout and showed enough guile to get back in the mix in the second half.

The Magpies started to push forward early in the second half and looked likely to equalise with Neil Martin making several good runs up the left wing, again supplied well by Gleeson and Moss.

Stortford upped their game and started to pass the ball around again, they kept the ball well and gave themselves plenty of opportunity to score.

Bertie Brayley worked his socks off and deserved to score and substitute Duane Jackman replaced him and his added speed caused the Dorchester defence further problems.

At this point the visitors were still well able to bring the score level until their defence imploded after Angus headed just wide.

Captain Jermyn and Vickers had to be pulled apart, both were cautioned by the referee before Vickers was eventually shown a red card.

It now became relatively easy for Stortford to maintain their momentum and the second goal came soon.

Nicholls was blocked bravely by Coward from only a few yards out but Jackman was in place to double the home side’s tally.

Stevland Angus, who came on for Cooper, who had taken a knock in the first half, missed another header.

Three wins on the trot for the home side but Dorchester look like a side that can win games on merit as they had shown the previous week against Havant and Waterlooville.
