Magpies suffer Thurrock thumping

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester Town’s shocking away record showed no signs of improvement on Saturday after they were thumped at Ship Lane.

The Magpies, who have played seven and lost seven away from the Jewson Stadium, have conceded 23 goals and only scored five, a record that leaves them struggling in the Blue Square South drop-zone.

Kevin Hill and Ian Selley returned for the Magpies while Gary Bowles dropped to the bench for Roy O’Brien’s men Third-place Thurrock continued their excellent run but were stunned after only two minutes when Matt Groves gave the visitors the lead from close range.

The hosts came straight back though and were level two minutes later when great work from David Bryant sent Fola Orinolishe away and he beat Harry Montacute before smashing home through keeper Regan Coward’s legs.

The home side started to dominate and a great move involving Paul Olima and Orinolishe saw Leon McKenzie’s header brilliantly saved by Coward.

With five minutes to go in the half Matt Paine hit a 25-yard volley which went just wide with Coward beaten.

Just as the Magpies looked to have kept Thurrock at bay two goals in a minute killed the game.

Firstly, Matt Bodkin’s run from the halfway line culminated in his shot from the edge of the box deflecting and beating Coward into the top corner and a minute late Leon Lalite’s fantastic pass sent McKenzie clear and he made no mistake from 15 yards.

The second half saw Thurrock continue their domination and the excellent Lalite scored just after the hour to make it four after being sent clear by Bryant.

Dorchester did have an effort cleared off the line when Andre Costa lobbed Joe Woolley only for the Thurrock skipper to get back and clear off the line.

Thurrock then scored a fifth with just over 15 minutes to go when Bryant smashed a volley home from the edge of the box.

Just before the end, Phil Walsh scored a consolation for Dorchester with a close range header but Thurrock were comfortable winners.
