Gulls strikes late to deny Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Only a late goal from Ben Joyce could separate League Two new boys Torquay United and a workmanlike Dorchester outfit at the Jewson Stadium last night.

Following a minute’s silence in honour of Sir Bobby Robson, the first half developed into an uninspiring affair with both sides failing to register a decent effort on target.

But a lot of credit had to go to the Magpies for containing their more illustrious opponents, who fielded the side expected to line up in their Coca-Cola League Two opener against Chesterfield next Saturday Apart from a handling error from trialist keeper Ryan Northmore that caused a brief moment of panic in the box and a hopeful header from on-loan forward Scott Rendell the Gulls created very little.

Meanwhile, at the other end Town created two openings through the industrious Ryan Moss, who proved a tough man to deal with for the visiting defence.

First, the ex-Bashley striker had a penalty appeal turned down after being bundled over by Chris Robertson following a flick on by Phil Walsh on 36 minutes before he then out-muscled Lee Mansell on the left only to cut inside and shoot wide of the near post.

At the start of the second half the Gulls began to up the tempo and on 53 minutes a great cross from the right by Wayne Carlisle found the head of Tim Sills but his effort cannoned off the back of Gary Bowles when he really should have scored.

Torquay made seven changes on the hour but they still could not break Dorchester down, who switched Matt Groves and trialist Jules Emati for Moss and Walsh.

Kevin Hill also entered the fray for the hosts to face his former club before Ivan Forbes wasted a great opportunity to give the Magpies the lead when he fired wide from 10 yards with 20 minutes remaining.

Nicky Wroe responded at the other end with a fierce shot from 25 yards that deflected just wide before the same player then laid in Joyce to finish off a speedy counter attack on 81 minutes to finally break the deadlock.

Elliot Benyon then had a chance to double the lead with two minutes remaining but his close range effort flicked up on to the bar.
