Groover's spot-on for Magpies
by
Echo Reporter
Matt Groves kept his cool to score a last-minute penalty and help
Dorchester grab a hard-earned point at Park View Road.
Manager Ashley Vickers felt that the Magpies had been unlucky
to have their unbeaten run halted at Chelmsford last Monday and
knew that his team would be in for another tough match on the road
at in-form Welling .
This time around the county town side kept going until the end
and secured a point after Groves came off the bench to convert
from the spot.
Vickers made four changes from the team that played at Chelmsford
but was still missing Nick Crittenden with an ankle injury and
flu-hit Ryan Moss.
Warren Byerley, who was called back from a spell with Bridport,
was preferred up front and skipper Kevin Hill made a welcome return.
In the opening minutes Lee Clarke and Tommy Whitnell both missed
the target for Welling before Byerley’s header for Dorchester
sailed wide.
Byerley was thwarted by Jack Parkinson’s tackle as he collected
a miss-hit Charlie Mitten clearance and Steve Devlin’s corner
required palming away by Mitten.
Good interplay between James Coutts and Jamie Gleeson allowed
the former a shot on goal, but he fired wide when well placed.
A mix-up between keeper Regan Coward and Nathan Walker almost
proved costly and Pugh nipped in to claim the loose ball. After
side-stepping Walker he struck a post with Coward struggling to
get back.
Pugh was involved again in the 17th minute when Gary Bowles brought
him down in the penalty area. Clarke converted the spot-kick.
The Magpies came agonisingly close to a quick response when Walker
headed against the bar from Devlin’s corner.
Coward made saves from Michael Deane, Pugh and Whitnell before
the Magpies had a shout for a penalty.
Coutts’ powerful shot appeared to strike the hand of Parkinson
but referee Mr Neil waved the claims away presumably believing
it to be ball to hand.
Gleeson was shown the first yellow card of the game on the stroke
of half-time.
Welling’s Pugh struck a post for the second time having
already shot wide twice in the early minutes of the second half.
Bowles became the second Magpies’ player to be cautioned
for attempting to pull back former Sky TV ‘Football Icon’ Sam
Hurrell by the shirt. Mark Jermyn then saved the Magpies with a
superb tackle on Hurrell before Coutts picked up a lay off from
Jules Emati-Emati and unleashed a powerful drive just wide of a
post.
In an attempt to further change things around Vickers brought
on Groves for Byerley in the 71st minute.
Carl Jenkinson, on work experience from Charlton Athletic, became
the first Welling player to be booked for a foul on Coutts. Walker
headed the resultant free-kick wide.
Another free-kick found the head of Walker but Mitten claimed
the effort which would have gone well wide anyway.
Jermyn was booked for fouling Hurrell before taking a knock from
the same player and Ryan Hill came on for him.
In the final minute of regulation time Dorchester were handed
a lifeline from the penalty spot.
Martin did not appear to pose much danger but Jenkinson’s
clumsy challenge on him gave the referee no choice but to award
a penalty, which Groves despatched emphatically.
There was still time for Clarke to shoot high and wide after being
teed up by Whitnell and Pugh, and for Deane to be shown a yellow
card for an ugly challenge. |
