Away-day agony for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Ian Selley was sent off as Dorchester Town’s woeful away record continued.

The struggling Magpies, who have yet to pick up a point away from home, suffered a four-goal first-half blitz as City took control at St George’s Lane Disorganised Dorchester lacked the fighting spirit against a mediocre City, in this Blue Square South basement battle.

Immediately from the kick-off Dorchester started to pressurise their opponents. However with City’s first attack of the afternoon on three minutes, Ashley Vickers conceded a free-kick on the edge of his own penalty area.

Although Alfie Carter’s shot was caught by visiting keeper Ryan Northmore, the ball was adjudged to have crossed the goal-line.

A minute later, with the Magpies still reeling, Matt Dinsmore found himself unmarked, and in acres of space and unleashed a shot past Northmore’s outstretched arms and into the top corner, for the hosts’ second.

From this moment on Dorchester attempts to get back into the game were restricted by the tight marking on their attackers.

On 11 minutes Phil Walsh could only head across the goal, and five minutes later Neil Martin got behind City’s defence, only to be ruled offside.

Dorchester were reduced to hitting long balls, and these were adequately dealt with by Worcester’s captain Tom Kemp.

The hosts went further ahead on 24 minutes with Dinsmore beating Northmore. And with five minutes of the half remaining, and the with the Dorchester defence failing to clear, Rob Elvins slotted home their fourth and doubled his side’s goal tally for the season.

Assistant-boss Ashley Vickers led Dorchester players out early for the second half, and manager Roy O’Brien made two changes, bringing on Regan Coward in goal and Ollie Barnes, to replace Northmore and Jake Smeeton.

With two minutes of the second period played, Walsh broke down the right, and crossed to Matt Groves, who was making his 400th appearance for the club, and he forced Hinchliffe into a good save at the bottom of his right-hand post.

Dorchester’s defence lacked composure, and with only six minutes of the half gone, conceded yet another free-kick on the edge of their penalty area, but fortunately Graham Ward’s shot went just over the bar.

Marco Adaggio, brought on to replace the injured Wayne Daniel in the first half, was a constant thorn in Dorchester’s side, taking advantage of the spaces created as the Magpies tried to push forward.

In desperation, Dorchester gave more and more free-kicks away, and on 52 minutes, Barnes went into the referee’s notebook, followed five minutes later by Selley.

With Worcester continuing to cause all sorts of problems, Selley received his marching orders on 72 minutes following a second yellow card.

City looked to add to their tally and hit Dorchester on the break. The lively Louis Bridges burst down the wing and crossed to Jordan Fitzpatrick whose shot went narrowly over the crossbar.

Minutes later, with the Dorchester defence in disarray, Vickers’ poorly judged back pass to Coward, resulted in the keeper committing himself, and being fouled in the process, for which Gary Walker received a booking.

With the time ebbing away, Ivan Forbes’ well hit shot was cleared off the line by Carter, and with minutes remaining, Coward produced the highlight of the afternoon, for the few Dorchester supporters at this match, with a point-blank reaction save to deny Aaron Ledgister.

On this performance, Dorchester’s first away win of the season, looks a long way off.
