Chase for Stewart
by
Ky Capel
Roy O’Brien remains hopeful that Gareth Stewart will once
again line up in goal for Dorchester Town.
The former AFC Bournemouth keeper was a crucial part of the county
town squad last season but looked to be on his way out after going
on trial at Blue Square South rivals Havant & Waterlooville
this summer.
However, O’Brien has revealed that Stewart could be involved
in tomorrow’s night home friendly against the Cherries (8pm).
The Dorchester chief, whose side lost 3-2 to Yeovil Town on Saturday
in their latest outing, said: “Hopefully we’ll get
Gareth back here. He played one game for Havant and has been doing
a lot of work with Neil Moss at Bournemouth, but he could be there
for us on Tuesday night – fingers crossed.
“I spoke to him on Friday night and it’s just a case
of budgets. I’d love to have him back and he liked what we
were doing last season, so fingers crossed we can get him back.
“Hopefully we’ll get Ryan Moss on board again as well
and that will create competition for places.”
Of Saturday’s defeat, in which the Magpies initially led
2-0 through Kevin Hill and Phil Walsh, O’Brien added: “Results
are irrelevant in pre-season and I think we put in a very professional
performance. The lads battled hard and they deserved their 2-0
lead.
“But Yeovil had the luxury of making 11 changes and I think
we tired a bit, especially having played against Bristol City on
Wednesday night.
“The lads are gutted they’ve been beaten but the fitness
is now under their belts.
“It’s now a case of who can we add to the squad. Ollie
Barnes came in and looked composed on the ball and we’ll
possibly look at trying to do something there. He’s a defender
who’s played at this level before with Worcester City and
twice against us last season.”
O’Brien, who after facing his former manager on Wednesday
night was now up against his ex-Yeovil team-mate in Terry Skiverton,
made two changes from the 2-1 defeat to Bristol City in midweek.
Ivan Forbes replaced trialist Neil Martin and Matt Groves came
in for Ryan Moss.
The first chance fell to the Magpies seven minutes in but former
Glover Nick Crittenden pulled his volley wide of goal.
The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute courtesy of Hill’s
head. Forbes won a free-kick, Jamie Gleeson whipped in a delivery
and captain Hill found the bottom corner.
Walsh could have made it 2-0 eight minutes before the break but
after receiving ex-Magpie keeper Richard Martin’s poor clearance,
the home striker skied his effort.
Another dismal clearance from Martin again fell straight to Walsh
and this time he made no mistake to extend Dorchester’s advantage
five minutes after the interval.
Groves had a goal ruled out shortly after, then 12 minutes later
the visitors wasted a glorious opportunity to get on the scoresheet – Dean
Bowditch heading Andy Welsh’s pin-point cross wide.
However, the Glovers did not have to wait much longer. A free-kick
on the edge of the Magpies’ box was taken short to Keiran
Murtagh who finished with ease.
And Yeovil were level in the 76th minute as Tottenham loanee Steven
Caulker headed home Welsh’s delivery.
The comeback was complete four minutes from time. A deflection
off trialist defender Ollie Barnes left visiting substitute Sam
Williams with just home number one Mark Ovendale to beat and the
new signing did not disappoint.
