Set piece master Hill inspires Magpies to first
win
by
Ky Capel
Premier League players could learn a thing or two from Ryan Hill
in the art of free-kick taking after he delivered two unstoppable
efforts to help Dorchester Town end their winless run at the ninth
time of asking.
The county town full-back, whose successful set-piece tally now
stands at four this season, twice left Boreham keeper Ashlee Jones
clutching at thin air as he found the top corner with power and
precision on both occasions – fully justifying his tag as
dead-ball specialist.
And his pair of thunderbolts, together with a first Dorchester
goal for loan signing Giuseppe Sole, who converted a 16th-minute
penalty, lifted the Magpies off the foot of Blue Square Bet South
for the first time since August 17.
Daniel Brathwaite headed home a late consolation for Wood but the
damage was done as the hosts ran out victorious in this early season
basement battle at the Avenue Stadium.
Boss Ashley Vickers made just one change to the side that suffered
defeat at the hands of Ebbsfleet seven days previous – Steve
Devlin replacing Dave Allen in the middle of the park.
There was though, a welcome return for defender Gary Bowles who
took a place on the bench after seven weeks out injured.
But it was Boreham who made the more positive start to proceedings,
almost taking the lead inside 10 minutes.
Scott Guyett’s interception fell kindly for Claude Seanla
but home stopper Simon Evans produced a vital block.
The Magpies appeared nervy, however, somewhat against the run of
play, the hosts were awarded a golden opportunity to take the lead
when a combination of David King and skipper Mario Noto brought
down Danny Ings in the Boreham box.
Fellow loanee Sole stepped up and fired low into the left corner
to chalk up his first goal in black and white.
The opening goal gave the Magpies a huge boost and moments later
Sole tried his luck with an acrobatic effort, which narrowly cleared
the crossbar.
The county town fans did not have to wait long for the all-important
second and it came from the reliable boot of Hill in the 26th minute.
The defender was given the nod by Vickers as both he and Sole stood
over the 30-yard set-piece, and Hill repaid the faith with a sublime
strike that found the top corner, leaving opposing gloveman Jones
with no chance whatsoever.
The closest Wood came to mounting a comeback in the first half
was a comfortable volley from Seanla while at the other end Hill
was this time unsuccessful with a 25-yard free-kick.
Dorchester were pressing well and snapping at the heels of their
visitors, fully deserving of their half-time lead.
And they started brightly as the second period got underway –
Nick Crittenden dragging a shot wide after Devlin’s initial
effort was blocked.
However, they were afforded a let-off four minutes into the restart.
King brushed past Kyle Critchell down the right and cut the ball
back for Noto, only for the latter to fire wide.
Dorchester were not out of the woods yet with Leon McKenzie posing
a danger on two occasions, but they did have a decent chance to
put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute.
However, after good work from Ings to create the opportunity, Sole
completely mistimed his swing.
The Magpies kept plugging away and got their reward when Devlin
was hauled down following a tenacious burst forward.
And it was no surprise to see Hill dispatch the 25-yard set-piece
in emphatic fashion – via the underside of the bar.
Lee Kersey should have reduced the deficit soon after, heading
over from close-range, before the consolation finally arrived with
just a minute to go.
A Noto delivery was missed by Evans, who made a terrific save to
concede the corner, and headed back across goal by McKenzie, leaving
Brathwaite with a simple finish from three yards.
It mattered little though as the Magpies were able to celebrate
their first three-point haul of the term while the visitors were
given a dressing down on the pitch by manager Ian Allison.
