Kyle breaks Iron

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Kyle Critchell’s maiden goal in senior football helped Dorchester Town to a much-deserved victory over table-topping Brain-tree Town.

The 23-year-old defender headed home a Nick Crittenden corner on 14 minutes to effectively seal a lively Blue Square Bet South encounter.

Referee Charles Breakspear was arguably the most prominent figure of the afternoon though – all for the wrong reasons.

And his bizarre display culminated in an early bath for Avenue Stadium favourite Steve Devlin, who was harshly sent off six minutes from time, and another red card for unused sub Harry Nodwell.

However, the league leaders rarely threatened the Magpies’ goal and the hosts were able to enjoy a second straight win and consecutive clean sheets.

With just 14 first-teamers at his disposal, boss Ashley Vickers was forced to include himself and under-18 skipper Connor Flood on the home bench.

Danny Ings partnered Ryan Moss in attack following the departure of loan striker Giuseppe Sole.

The Magpies almost lost another body inside the opening minute when skipper Scott Guyett went down following a clash of heads.

Vickers readied himself just in case and was surely relieved to see his captain return unhurt.

The visitors fashioned the first gilt-edged chance of the afternoon, only for Kenny Davis to head wide of the right-hand post.

And the Iron were made to pay for that miss as the hosts opened the scoring just two minutes later through Critchell.

Breakspear became more and more involved as the half wore on, infuriating both sides with some of his decisions.

Despite the inconsistencies of the man in black, Dorchester were carrying out a fine job of frustrating their high-flying opponents.

And they fully deserved to go into the half-time interval in front. However, it could have been a more comfortable margin, and a second for the now goal hungry Critchell, had Nathan McDonald not made a superb save from the full-back’s flick-on.

Braintree thought they would be presented with the perfect chance to level four minutes into the restart when David Bryant went down inside the area under the challenge of Critchell.

However, to the away side’s anguish, their cries for a spot-kick fell on deaf ears.

Simon Evans was then called into action for the first time when he beat away a long-distance drive from Sam Lechmere while at the other end, Jermyn was not far away with a 25-yard volley.

The Magpies went even closer to adding to their lead a minute before the hour. Ings gave chase to a long ball over the top and was only denied by a smart stop from McDonald.

Ings’ pace was causing problems for the visitors and soon after he showed great determination to keep the ball in play, as full-back Ryan Peters tried to shepherd it out.

His endeavour deserved reward but the Bournemouth teenager saw his subsequent attempt blocked.

Neil Martin was then on hand to clear after Evans failed to gather before the referee waved away half-hearted appeals for a home penalty as Moss hit the deck under pressure from Peters.

Jamie Guy blazed over as the Iron continued their search for an equaliser. But the Magpies remained the more threatening side, as proved when an unmarked Nathan Walker found the side netting from a Crittenden corner.

Braintree though were thrown a lifeline via the dismissal of Devlin.

The midfielder was late going in on Iron defender Matt Payne but the offence warranted a yellow card at best.

However, with the Braintree dugout baying for blood and Payne rolling around in a fine show of amateur dramatics, Breakspear had no hesitation in issuing a straight red.

The official was once again reaching for his pocket in the penultimate minute but the offender was not even on the field as substitute Nodwell was given his marching orders for apparent dissent.

Hearts were firmly in mouths when the Essex outfit saved their best chance for last. Fortunately though, Guy poked wide from eight yards with the goal at his mercy.

Dorchester won last year’s corresponding fixture 5-0 and although Saturday’s scoreline was far less emphatic, the manner of the victory was just as impressive.
