Ebbing away

Dorchester Town’s miserable start to the campaign continued
after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ebbsfleet United.
The rock-bottom Magpies are still seeking an elusive first victory
in Blue Square Bet South, as the pressure mounts on manager Ashley
Vickers.
Vickers’ under-fire charges have chalked up only two draws
to date and remain one point adrift of second-bottom Boreham Wood.
The county town outfit had looked set to add to their tally at
the Avenue Stadium on Saturday before Craig Stone capitalised on
a poor clearance by Ryan Hill with a mere seven minutes remaining.
Debutant Danny Ings had earlier cancelled out Tom Phipp’s
18-minute opener, but it was Ebbsfleet who enjoyed the last laugh
to compound Dorchester’s woes.
Vickers made three changes to the side that had gone down to a
2-0 reversal by Chelmsford City last weekend.
Kyle Critchell and Ings came in for injured duo Neil Martin and
James Coutts, while Steve Devlin was dropped and replaced by new
recruit Giuseppe Sole.
Genuine goalscoring chances came at both ends during the opening
exchanges, which were both frenetic and entertaining.
Dead-ball specialist Hill rattled the outside of gloveman Preston
Edwards’ post with a trademark free-kick, while at the opposite
end Michael West unleashed a fine volley that flashed over the crossbar.
Sole was presented with a golden opportunity on nine minutes after
being played through by livewire Ings, but his shot lacked power
and was palmed away.
A long-range effort by West failed to test Magpies’ custodian
Simon Evans – but disaster struck for the hosts on 18 minutes.
Persistence from winger Ricky Shakes, who caused Critchell problems
all afternoon, saw him shift the ball to West, whose centre was
parried away by Evans only as far as Phipp, who blasted the ball
high into the net from 15 yards.
Ings spurned a chance to equalise as Dorchester sought a swift
response, but the leveller duly came from the AFC Bournemouth loanee
on 26 minutes.
Newly-installed skipper Scott Guyett played a delightful ball over
the top to Ings, who showed expert control before lifting it beyond
Edwards.
Ebbsfleet, unbeaten on their travels, reminded the county town
side of their attacking prowess as Phipps headed straight at Evans.
But Dorchester were in the ascendancy and nearly went in front
when Ings beat Paul Lorraine before sliding the ball across goal,
only for a deflection off Derek Duncan to divert it agonisingly
past the outstretched boot of Ryan Moss.
The Magpies started the second half as they had ended the first
and felt they should have been awarded a penalty following a clash
between Moss and Ebbsfleet captain Lorraine.
However, the referee awarded the decision in favour of the visitors,
much to the disbelief of home fans who were adamant it should have
gone the other way.
Moss was again in the thick of the action and thought he had netted
a second after skipping past two defenders and striking the ball
firmly across goal, only to see Edwards produce an excellent save
to keep the deadlock intact.
That near miss was the catalyst for a sustained period of attacking
from Ebbsfleet, who started to stamp their influence on proceedings.
And they should have regained the lead when a mistake from Mark
Jermyn gave the dangerous Shakes a gift-wrapped chance from six
yards – but he showed a distinct lack of composure in skewing
his shot wide of an upright.
Evans then acrobatically beat away a Gareth Williams shot that
had seemed destined for the top corner, as the visitors continued
to look the likeliest winners.
But Dorchester had their moments, with substitute Devlin injecting
fresh impetus and twice going close to scoring.
Edwards was summoned to deal with decent efforts from Nick Crittenden
and Hill, before Ebbsfleet landed the killer blow on 83 minutes.
A speculative cross was played into the Magpies’ penalty
box but Hill’s misplaced clearance rested at the feet of Stone,
who rifled the ball in off the crossbar.
In a last roll of the dice, Vickers brought on Saul Otobo but Dorchester’s
search for a second equaliser proved a fruitless one, as they were
sentenced to another defeat
