Magpies swamp Gills

Dorchester Town eased into the last eight of the Dorset Senior Cup last night with victory over 10-man Gillingham Town.

Nick Crittenden bagged a brace while Ryan Moss, Nathan Walker and substitute Rico Wilson were also on target – the latter notching on his competitive debut.

The Toolstation Western League Division One visitors had equalised via a Lee Gale penalty but their hopes were dashed when captain Ashley Clarke saw red for deliberate handball.

Despite seeing his side run out 5-1 winners, boss Ashley Vickers was far from impressed.

He said: “We get success by putting balls into certain areas at certain times, and as soon as three or four players don’t do it, it makes it difficult for us.

“You don’t change things that bring you success and the boys got an absolute rollicking afterwards. We need people to do the right things at the right times and we didn’t do that in the second half.”

Vickers added: “We’ve got to wait on Harry Nodwell (head), Neil Martin (groin) and Danny Ings (calf) now as they all picked up knocks. Hopefully they’ll be okay for Saturday.”

Vickers put out a near full-strength side and named under-18 squad members Tom Wade and Lee White on the bench.

Given the Magpies’ superior league status, it was no surprise to see them open the scoring on 14 minutes – Crittenden finding the bottom-left corner with power and precision.

But the Gills were level not long after. Nick Thomson and home defender Gary Bowles tangled in the box and when the former fell to the floor, referee Colin Hubbard pointed to the spot.

Gale stepped up and beat the outstretched fingers of Regan Coward to net his 23rd of the season.

Back came the hosts though, and they restored their advantage in the 29th minute through Moss, who held off the challenge of James Hatcher before firing low into the far corner.

Gillingham’s confidence appeared shaken as the Magpies extended their lead just two minutes later.

After Harry Nodwell had been denied by visiting keeper Jamie Beale, Walker headed home the subsequent corner.

The away side’s night took another turn for the worse when skipper Clarke was dismissed for handling on his goal-line.

But Moss saw his resulting spot-kick expertly saved by Beale.

A third penalty of the evening was awarded five minutes into the second period and it went to the 10 men of Gillingham after Crittenden was penalised for handball.

Coward though repeated the heroics of his opposite number, repelling Gale’s effort with his legs.

Moss headed against the bar at the midway stage of the half before Gale was twice denied by smart stops from Coward.

The hosts, who handed debuts to 16-year-old Wade and forward Wilson, and gave fit-again James Coutts a first run out since September 4, failed to make the most of their numerical advantage until three minutes before the end when substitute Wilson poked home.

A fifth duly arrived soon after – Wilson teeing up Crittenden for his second of the night.
