Not a happy 50th for sent-off Devs

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Steve Devlin will not forget his 50th Dorchester appearance in a hurry – experiencing every emotion in a 2-2 draw with Hampton & Richmond.

The tenacious midfielder struck a 68th-minute free-kick, which went right through visiting keeper Joe Talbot, to give the Magpies the lead at the Avenue Stadium after Nick Crittenden’s penalty had cancelled out Charlie Moone’s opener.

But, with Moone restoring parity once more, the 25-year-old’s joy soon turned to despair as he saw red with eight minutes to go, picking up a second yellow for a needless challenge on Dave Tarpey.

Luckily for him, his county town team-mates saw out the remainder of the Blue Square Bet South encounter to notch their 20th point of the season.

The Magpies were forced into two changes from the New Year’s Day defeat at Weston-super-Mare.

Jamie Frampton and Jamie Mudge were both handed their first league starts of the season, replacing injured duo Kyle Critchell (knee) and James Coutts (groin).

The latter though, was fit enough to take a place on the bench alongside keeper Simon Evans – back in the squad after returning from holiday – but Rico Wilson dropped out through illness.

Boss Ashley Vickers had backed his players to respond from Saturday’s late loss but they almost fell behind inside four minutes.

Hampton skipper Craig Tanner found space down the left and delivered a dangerous low centre.

As Tarpey slid in to meet the cross he looked odds on to score, but somehow the visiting striker failed to connect and Dorchester breathed a huge sigh of relief.

After surviving that early scare the hosts stepped up a gear and came within a whisker of taking the lead themselves.

Ryan Moss led the breakaway and picked out Crittenden, who was in acres of space through the middle.

Talbot came racing out of his area, Crittenden flicked the ball over his head and into the path of Mudge.

The home forward shook off his marker and, with Talbot frantically retreating, tried his luck from 30 yards only to see the effort drop agonisingly over.

A shocking decision from referee Mark Pottage put the Magpies in serious danger. A misplaced clearance was handled by Regan Coward and to the amazement of the Avenue Stadium faithful, the man in black awarded an indirect free-kick a yard inside the home box.

However, justice prevailed when brave defending from Moss kept Moone’s 20th-minute drive at bay.

Dean Inman was twice foiled by Coward as the half progressed while the referee continued to frustrate the hosts with a number of questionable calls, as well as the failure to award a penalty for alleged handball by David Stevens.

Mudge, who was adamant the giant centre-half had handled, then sent a 20-yard strike narrowly over the Beavers’ bar.

The Magpies created two decent openings in the early exchanges of the second half – Nathan Walker heading narrowly wide and Mudge blasting beyond the far post – but found themselves a goal adrift in the 54th minute.

And once again they had reason to feel aggrieved with the Gillingham official’s decision, or lack of one.

Good build-up play saw the ball moved out to wing-back Ryan Adams and he centred for Moone.

As Gary Bowles went in to head clear, Moone challenged with a raised boot before poking the loose ball past Coward from six yards.

An hour gone and the Magpies finally profited from a debatable decision, equalising from the penalty spot.

Moss beat Talbot to the ball but appeared to be on his way down before the gloveman made any form of contact.

Pottage had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and after a two-minute delay, Crittenden dispatched the ball with ease.

An off-balance Bowles came close to completing the comeback moments later, following Talbot’s failure to gather.

Dorchester did not have to wait long for their next opportunity and this time they did take the lead, thanks again to Talbot’s slippery grasp.

Moss won a free-kick 25 yards out, Devlin unleashed a rocket and the subsequent shot squirmed through the body of Talbot, who appeared to have the set-piece covered.

The advantage did not last though, as Moone took full advantage of an unfortunate slip from Bowles to net the game’s fourth goal in the space of 17 minutes.

A quarter of an hour after edging in front, the Magpies were now clinging on for a point following the dismissal of Devlin for a second bookable offence.

Ironically, it was one of few verdicts Pottage called correctly.

Despite being a man down, it was the hosts who almost snatched all three points in the dying seconds – Moss’ angled effort rolling the wrong side of a post.
