Hawks swoop over eight-man Magpies
by
Echo Reporter
A frustrating and bewildering night for Dorchester Town saw Havant
& Waterlooville run out 3-1 winners and the Magpies end the
Blue Square Bet South encounter with just eight men.
Player-manager Ashley Vickers and fellow defenders Jake Smeeton
and Kyle Critchell all received straight reds for second-half offences.
The second period was certainly one to forget for the travelling
contingent, especially after Steve Devlin’s sweet strike had
given the Magpies a half-time lead.
Replacement forward Mustafa Tiryaki smashed home a fine equaliser
on the hour and then a bizarre moment saw Vickers dismissed for
wrestling a streaker to the ground.
Former Magpie Wes Fogden completed the comeback before Smeeton
and Critchell were sent packing in quick succession.
And an injury-time third from Steve Ramsey rounded off a miserable
evening for the visitors, who remain five points clear of the relegation
zone.
Vickers said: “We were 1-0 up and playing ever so well. They
scored a great goal to equalise and you have to give the guy credit
for that.
“We were sticking to a game plan though, doing our jobs and
giving everything as usual.
“We were then down to 10 men and it shook the boys. They
got a second and then Jake went for a 50-50 with Giuseppe Sole.
The ball was bouncing in the air, Giuseppe got their first and they
clashed heads.
“It was Jake’s first foul of the night and it was an
incredible decision to send him off.
“Then Kyle was sent off for apparently saying something to
the linesman. All he did was ask why Jake had been sent off.
“I would be the first to say if my players have been abusive
but that was not the case. As for Jake, he was just a little late,
nothing more.
“Havant’s manager Shaun Gale said he will help us with
a DVD of the game.
“No one in the ground, players and supporters alike, will
have seen anything like that before and no one will see anything
like it again.
“I will always bounce back and my players are the same. Too
many refs have not experienced playing football and it’s killing
the game.”
Boss Vickers kept faith with the same side that disposed of fellow
strugglers Thurrock just 48 hours previous, which included himself
at the heart of the defence.
And the Magpies carried on from where they left off at the weekend,
taking the lead after only nine minutes at Westleigh Park.
Devlin took aim from 20 yards and unleashed a left-foot thunderbolt
beyond home keeper Nathan Ashmore.
The Hawks then lost striker Manny Williams to injury midway through
the half, following a collision with Magpies’ gloveman Dan
Thomas, but were able to call upon second top scorer Tiryaki.
However, it was the visitors who remained largely on top with Ryan
Moss spurning a glorious opportunity to double the lead.
The Magpies’ leading marksman sprung the offside trap but
snatched at his shot, which flew wide.
That miss, prior to half-time, proved costly as the Hawks restored
parity on the hour – substitute Tiryaki scoring from 25 yards.
Then came the major talking point of the night. A streaker invaded
the pitch and managed to evade the pursuing stewards.
Vickers took matters into his own hands – literally –
and halted the intruder, only to see red for his 70th-minute intervention.
The dismissal caused a major stir, with the man in black also opting
to remove assistant-manager Phil Simkin and assistant-kitman Dan
Fuge from the county town dugout for their protests.
Havant capitalised on their new-found advantage and took the lead
with just 13 minutes to go.
And to make matter worse, it came via former county town favourite
Fogden.
Dorchester were unable to find a way back into the game and ended
the contest with eight men.
Smeeton and then Critchell, who also sustained a groin injury on
the night, followed Vickers to an early bath, meaning all but one
of the visiting back four had received their marching orders.
To compound the Magpies’ misery, Ramsey added a third for
the hosts in stoppage time.
