Magpies' run ended

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

After giving Maidenhead United a two-goal head start at the Avenue Stadium, Dorchester Town failed to recover and saw their six-game unbeaten run in Blue Square Bet South come to an end.

The hosts were slow to start and looked shell-shocked when Ashley Smith scored direct from a corner, thanks in part to the blustery conditions, after just two minutes.

And the lead was doubled right on the cusp of half-time as Kieron Knight slotted home a more conventional effort.

Dorchester had seen a goal ruled out prior to United’s second but eventually got off the mark courtesy of loan ace Danny Ings.

Try as they might, a leveller was not forthcoming and it was the visitors who came out on top in the battle of the Magpies.

Ryan Moss resumed his attacking partnership with Ings, meaning the returning Jamie Mudge had to settle for a spot on the bench, while Steve Devlin came in for Neil Martin – who suffered a recurrence of a groin injury.

Despite arguably strengthening the side from the one that drew 0-0 on Saturday, the hosts fell behind in bizarre fashion.

Smith’s in-swinging corner was caught by the wind, fooling home keeper Simon Evans, before flying into the top corner.

The early goal clearly had the Dorset Magpies rattled and they could have been further behind had Nathan Walker not spared the blushes of team-mate Kyle Crit-chell.

Critchell’s misdirected header, from a Smith cross, was goalbound until Walker intervened with a vital clearance on the line.

Following their sluggish start to proceedings, Dorchester thought they had drawn level in the 29th minute.

Walker met Nick Crittenden’s corner at the far post before Moss scrambled the ball home.

However, the referee’s assistant on the far side spotted an infringement as Walker jumped for the cross and the goal was chalked off.

Dorchester kept plugging away and this time it was United’s turn to present their opponents with an easy chance following a weak header back to goal. Unfortunately for the hosts, Ings lacked composure and blazed high from 12 yards.

The county town outfit though, remained far from convincing in defence and received a let-off when Knight nodded wide after Gary Bowles mistimed his jump.

The Maidenhead forward was not to be denied a second time though, and converted Ashley Nicholls’ through pass on the stroke of half-time.

It almost got a lot worse for the hosts eight minutes after the break as Jake Smeeton’s poor control set up a two-on-one in United’s favour. However, Crittenden gave chase and caught up with Sam Collins before dispossessing his opposite winger.

Buoyed by the reprieve, the Dorset Magpies hauled themselves back into contention just 60 seconds later.

A Critchell cross found its way to an unmarked Ings and this time the 18-year-old held his nerve to net his sixth goal in black and white.

Having given themselves hope, Dorchester went in search of an equaliser, and they almost found it when Moss glanced a header narrowly over the top.

The same man went even closer five minutes after the hour. First being denied by a smart stop from keeper Steve Williams before volleying the rebound wide of goal.

Bowles then saw a looping header, from Devlin’s delivery, drop agonisingly wide of the right-hand post.

The home pressure was beginning to mount and it was the visitors who were now living dangerous, none more so than Bobby Behzadi, who was fortunate not to concede a penalty after running into Ings.

Ings was becoming more prominent and was inches away from restoring parity. The AFC Bournemouth youngster expertly met Crittenden’s cross but saw his headed effort tipped on to a post by Williams.

In a rare foray forward, Maidenhead substitute Kieron St Aimie forced a decent save from Evans.

By now Mudge had been introduced to the action – making his first appearance since rejoining – and it was the hosts who remained the more threatening with Williams having to keep out a near-post volley from Moss.

Time was now very much against Dorchester but they were handed a 30-yard set-piece opportunity in the last minute of normal time.

Luckily for the Berkshire Magpies, Devlin’s fierce drive whistled past the upright.

There was still time for Moss to out-jump two defenders but send his header the wrong side of the bar.
