Frampton inspires rusty Magpies
by
Ky Capel
Although far from convincing, Dorchester Town moved into the last
four of the Dorset Senior Cup at the expense of minnows Poole Borough.
The Blue Square Bet South Magpies took 46 minutes to find a way
past their Magna Dorset Premier League opponents with defender Jamie
Frampton marking his competitive debut with a close-range volley.
Ryan Moss then came off the bench to effectively put the quarter-final
tie out of reach.
County town chief Ashley Vickers admitted his charges were a tad
“rusty” but was pleased to see them progress nonetheless.
He said: “We wanted to win the game of course because we
wanted to keep our run going but it was great to get the likes of
Harry Nodwell, Jamie Frampton, Jamie Mudge and James Coutts on the
pitch.
“Lee White – from the under-18s – also did ever
so well when he came on near the end.
“We were a little bit rusty but we just used it as a stepping
stone to reiterate what we do and hopefully what we’ll do
against Chelmsford on Saturday.
“The pitch was a bit like an ice skating rink, I’m
pleased to get the result under our belts but fair play to Poole
Borough as they had a real go. Credit to them for making it difficult
for us.”
Jamie Mudge was handed his first start since returning to the club
last month, Frampton made his full debut while Regan Coward, Harry
Nodwell and James Coutts were also drafted into the starting XI.
Under-18 duo Lee White and Andy Suttle were named among the substitutes.
It took just 65 seconds for the higher-ranked Magpies to create
an opening – Jamie Gleeson firing narrowly wide from the edge
of the box.
Despite the five-tier barrier, Borough more than held their own
in the opening exchanges with keeper Jakub Malara not being called
into action until the 14th minute, when he was forced to tip over
an inswinging free-kick from Neil Martin.
In fact, that was the closest the Magpies came in the entire half
with highlights sparse to say the least.
The last action of the half saw the visitors almost take a surprise
lead. The loose ball fell kindly for Anthony Winders but, with just
Coward to beat, the striker’s effort lacked power.
Vickers’ half-time team talk clearly had the desired effect
as Dorchester broke the deadlock just 50 seconds after the restart.
Nick Crittenden’s corner was dropped by Malara and volleyed
high into the net by Frampton.
Only a superb save from the Borough gloveman, following Mudge’s
acrobatic strike, prevented a second prior to the hour mark.
But from the resultant corner, the Magpies extended their advantage.
Martin delivered left-footed and substitute Moss beat Malara to
glance home.
Moss and fellow replacement White both squandered late opportunities
to make it three.
Although creating little else of note, Dorchester saw out the remaining
minutes with relative ease. |
