Nathan's cup joy
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town will face fierce rivals Weymouth in the final of
the Dorset Senior Cup after the former overcame Poole Town at the
County Ground last night.
And the makeshift Magpies had Nathan Walker to thank once again
as he notched his second double in the space of just six days to
give the favourites a two-goal headstart at Hamworthy headquarters.
The Dolphins, who lie three tiers below Dorchester, reduced the
arrears through Tom Jeffes but Nick Crittenden secured a date with
the Terras in this year’s showpiece.
Assistant-boss Phil Simkin said: “It was quite a difficult
game for us but we got the result we wanted and we came out of it
with no injuries as far as I’m aware.
“They left a few players out and so did we. Overall we deserved
to win but it wasn’t easy.
“Nathan scored with two really good headers and we had chances
to score more.
“Poole were dangerous on the break though and pulled it back
before Critts made it 3-1, and at that point it was game over.
“It was a game we didn’t particular want but we have
got through and we’ve now got a final against Weymouth.”
The Magpies made three changes from Tuesday’s defeat to St
Albans with Adam Taylor starting at right-back, Crittenden occupying
the wing and under-18 ace Andy Welch coming into the defence.
The bench meanwhile, included former first-team star and current
under-18 boss Robbie Taylor – father of Adam.
The Blue Square Bet South outfit made the perfect start when a
Steve Devlin corner was headed home by Walker, rising above his
elder brother, and ex-county town defender, Michael in the process.
Poole responded positively and saw Micky Hubbard hit a post before
Michael Walker limped off prior to the break.
To add to his misery, Michael then saw his younger sibling extend
the visitors’ advantage nine minutes into the second period
with his fourth goal in less than a week.
The towering centre-half rose highest from another Devlin corner
and although there was some debate as to whether the ball had crossed
the line, the goal was given.
The Dolphins refused to cave in and halved the deficit shortly
after courtesy of Jeffes, but the two-goal cushion was eventually
restored with Crittenden netting his ninth of the season 17 minutes
from time.
And Dorchester finished the semi-final tie with the father and
son combination of Robbie and Adam Taylor sharing the same pitch.
On the subject of those coming into the starting line-up, and the
inclusion of Taylor senior, Simkin added: “Adam defended well
and used the ball well, Critts was exceptional while Andy got better
as the game went on and we were really pleased with him.
“Robbie is in his early 40s and he was originally in the
Dorchester first team many years ago but he came on and helped us
see out the last few minutes.”
There was little time to reflect on the victory with attentions
immediately swit-ching to tomorrow’s return to league action
and a 200-mile journey to Dover (3pm).
Simkin said: “This will be our fourth game in eight days
with a lot of travelling in-volved, which is a factor that people
often don’t realise.
“I just hope the recent games haven’t taken too much
out of the lads.”
Kyle Critchell is eligible to play after completing a three-match
ban but the county town defender will then miss another three games
following his dismissal at Havant & Waterlooville almost a fortnight
ago. |
