Rico's reward as Magpies progress
by
Ky Capel
Rico Wilson bagged a brace as Dorchester Town cruised into the second
round of the FA Trophy at the expense of St Albans City.
After a goalless and largely uninspiring first half at the Avenue
Stadium, the Magpies found top gear with a quick-fire double that
paved the way to a straightforward victory.
Ryan Moss broke the deadlock courtesy of a smart finish before
Wilson capped only his second competitive start for the club with
a goal straight afterwards.
And the 19-year-old rounded off the scoring with a simple tap-in
on 68 minutes after gleefully accepting a fumble from City keeper
Paul Bastock, who then was lucky not to be given his marching orders
for a cynical foul on Moss.
Wilson could – and probably should – have completed
his hat-trick in the dying moments but, having skipped past three
defenders, he miscued his shot wide of an upright.
However, it did not detract from a professional performance by
Dorchester, who were much the better side and deservedly banked
a cool £5,000.
With boss Ashley Vickers absent due to a prior engagement, assistant-manager
Phil Simkin assumed the reins for the Magpies’ first home
match since November 9.
The only change from their last competitive fixture, at Weston-super-Mare
three weeks ago, saw Wilson come in for former loanee Danny Ings.
Such a long period without action was bound to have some effect
on the players and their rustiness was evident during the early
skirmishes, which were extremely cagey.
St Albans’ James Fisher was the first man to register a shot
of any description 15 minutes in, but his speculative effort ballooned
harmlessly over the crossbar.
At the opposite end, livewire Steve Devlin just failed to pick
out an unmarked Moss before Neil Martin forced Bastock to palm away
his delicate snapshot from close to the by-line.
A change of referee because of injury was just about the most exciting
incident the crowd witnessed in an otherwise pedestrian beginning
to the contest.
However, the Magpies gradually gained a foothold on proceedings
and created a glorious chance to draw first blood on 25 minutes.
After being played clean through by Kyle Critchell, Wilson showed
composure only to strike the ball directly at Bastock from the edge
of the penalty area.
Moments later, Critchell, who was to receive a knock to his problematic
ankle, came close to netting the opener when his header from a Devlin
corner sailed just over the bar.
City were offering little in the way of attacking threat but almost
shocked the hosts when an Ollie Palmer shot took a wicked deflection
off Mark Jermyn and required gloveman Simon Evans, who until then
had been a spectator, to be alert to the danger.
The remainder of the first half petered out and there was little
indication of what was to follow, as the Magpies seized the initiative.
Merely 45 seconds into the second period, they were ahead when
Crittenden’s slide-rule pass found Moss, who made no mistake
with a clinical finish.
And before supporters had barely had time to settle themselves
down, they were on their feet once more to celebrate a second goal.
Again Moss was at the heart of it, his tenacity forcing a calamitous
defensive mix-up between Bastock and Mark Peters, which allowed
the striker to intercept and square the ball for Wilson to poke
home from two yards out.
It was an explosive start and, despite a deteriorating pitch, Dorchester
were looking increasingly like they would further extend their advantage.
A stunning free-kick from Devlin narrowly evaded the far post but
there was no respite for hapless City, who looked impotent up front
and unsure of themselves at the back.
To no surprise, the third goal arrived on 68 minutes when Bastock
spilled Devlin’s corner and handed Wilson an early Christmas
present, which he duly gobbled up.
Bastock was embroiled in the game’s flashpoint in the latter
stages after he poleaxed Moss, who had been released by substitute
James Coutts.
A free-kick was awarded but Bastock was grateful for the leniency
of the referee, who brandished a yellow card despite the keeper
having denied Moss a clear goalscoring chance.
That it took St Albans a full 80 minutes to win their first corner
of the afternoon underlined Dorch-ester’s utter dominance.
And though Wilson then wasted a wonderful opportunity to complete
his hat-trick, the Magpies had done more than enough to march on
in the competition. |
