Bishop's barrier for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A controversial decision denied Dorchester Town a fourth straight victory in Blue Square Bet South.

After a rather tepid first half, the Magpies piled on the pressure in the second, forcing Bishop’s Stortford keeper Ross Kitteridge into several fine saves.

Led by the outstanding Danny Ings, the county town outfit thought they had finally found a way through just three minutes from the end.

Kyle Critchell appeared to force the ball over the line, following a goalmouth scramble, but the linesman was unperturbed and referee Adam Bromley awarded the visitors a free-kick instead, much to the home side’s frustration.

Despite the stalemate, Ashley Vickers’ men have now gone six league games without defeat.

The Magpies were forced to make four changes from the midweek Dorset Senior Cup win over Gillingham.

Simon Evans returned in goal while Jake Smeeton, Jamie Gleeson and Rico Wilson came in for suspended trio Steve Devlin, Harry Nodwell and Ryan Moss.

Smeeton, back from a loan spell at Poole Town, was making his first appearance of the season.

New signing Steve Gilbert and fellow defender Jamie Frampton, also returning from a loan period, were named among the substitutes.

Wilson’s pace posed some early problems for Bishop’s and he won a free-kick in a dangerous position just four minutes in.

The subsequent effort from Neil Martin, playing on the left of midfield in Devlin’s absence, struck the wall but fell kindly for Nick Crittenden, whose shot was deflected for a fruitless corner.

Stortford created their best opening of the half when Ben Bowditch picked out Leon Antoine with a chip into the box. However, the latter failed to connect and the chance went begging.

Gleeson then glanced a header wide of goal before Wilson almost profited from hesitant defending following a Nathan Walker knock-down – Kitteridge blocking the striker’s angled effort.

Captain Mark Jermyn saw a 20-yard volley diverted out of harm’s way before Kitteridge was forced to punch, from the resulting corner, after Wilson managed to get something on Crittenden’s delivery.

Despite huff and puff from both sides, clear-cut chances were few and far between and it was no surprise to see the half end goalless.

The scoreline was almost altered five minutes into the second period but fortunately for the hosts, Bowditch’s dipping effort, from just inside the box, clipped the top of the crossbar.

That opportunity only arrived through a failure to clear and it took 57 minutes for the game’s first real moment of class – and the source came as no surprise.

With little room to manoeuvre, Ings cleverly flicked the ball over the head of defender Lynval Duncan. The sublime piece of skill deserved a goal but the loanee could only fire wide from an acute angle.

Strike partner Wilson had appeals for a penalty waved away six minutes later, claiming he had been pulled back by Connor Essam, and that was to be his final contribution as boss Vickers threw on burly defender Josh Ford as a makeshift forward – the 20-year-old making his county town debut in the process.

James Coutts also arrived on the scene shortly after but it was Ings who remained the most potent threat and only an excellent save from Kitteridge denied the 18-year-old his sixth goal in a Dorchester shirt.

Crittenden twice went close from the distance as the Magpies continued to up the ante.

But again they found Kitteridge in fine form as man of the moment Ings saw his header on the turn kept out by the flying gloveman.

The home crowd finally erupted in the 87th minute, thinking their side had snatched a late winner.

A Crittenden free-kick near the left corner flag was met by a scramble in the box, which ended with Critchell having seemingly won the game.

However, the home supporters’ initial joy turned to anguish when the man in black blew in favour of the away side.

Dorchester kept plugging away, fashioning 10 corners over the course of the afternoon, but they were unable to find a way past the Stortford rearguard and had to settle for a point.
