Ex-Terra ruins Magpies' New Year

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A late goal from former Weymouth man Dean Grubb ensured there was to be no happy New Year for Dorchester Town.

The Weston-super-Mare substitute struck nine minutes from time to settle a rather uneventful Blue Square Bet South encounter at the Woodspring Stadium.

The Magpies – contesting their first league fixture since November 13 – will feel aggrieved given the decisive goal came from the Seagulls’ solitary shot on target.

However, the visitors struggled to fashion many golden opportunities themselves and, as a result, suffered their first defeat in all competitions for almost two months.

And there was to be no repeat of Dorchester’s last visit to Weston – a 3-1 FA Trophy win on November 20.

Boss Ashley Vickers, making four changes from the Dorset Senior Cup victory over Poole Borough almost three weeks ago, started with a five-man midfield which saw James Coutts playing off lone frontman Ryan Moss.

And the duo almost combined to devastating effect inside three minutes.

Coutts’ hook to the far post was nodded back across goal by Dorchester’s number nine and after a moment’s hesitation, home keeper Lloyd Irish smothered the ball with Coutts looking to pounce.

Irish was experiencing a rather unconvincing opening 10 minutes and was fortunate to see his fumble fall short of the waiting Nick Crittenden.

Referee Brett Huxtable was also kept busy early on, booking both Steve Devlin and Weston right-back Jamie Price for late challenges on one another.

It was very much a war of attrition in the first half-hour with the visitors’ best offering coming via a 25-yard free-kick from Crittenden that sailed over the top.

Coutts then glanced a header wide of goal, following Kyle Critchell’s cross, while at the other end, the Seagulls’ first real foray saw Marcus Duharty fail to trouble Regan Coward in the Magpies’ goal.

Dorchester remained the more threatening side and in the last action of the half, Devlin’s goalbound volley, from Crittenden’s centre, was thwarted by a well-placed Matt Villis.

Having offered precious little in the opening 45 minutes, Weston-super-Mare almost took the lead inside 40 seconds of the restart.

A long ball out of defence was missed by Gary Bowles, sending Duharty clean through.

Fortunately for the travelling contingent, Coward was alert to the danger and raced off his line to deny the home forward.

The Magpies were dealt a blow five minutes later when Critchell was forced off through injury.

Matt Groves came on in his place – with skipper Mark Jermyn moving to full-back – to make his first appearance since returning from a three-month loan spell at Wimborne Town.

The county town stalwart huffed and puffed but the story remained the same with clear-cut chances at a premium.

That was until the 81st minute when the hosts opened the scoring with their first and only shot on target. Brett Trowbridge reached the edge of the visitors’ box unchallenged and laid the ball off to substitute Grubb.

The ex-Terra steadied himself before firing low into the bottom corner via the inside of the left-hand post.

The Weston winger almost sealed the contest three minutes from the end, but his angled effort rolled narrowly wide.

Dorchester threw Nathan Walker up front in a last-ditch attempt to rescue something from the match but there was to be no salvation and 2011 started in defeat, just as 2010.
