Away-day joy earns £4,000 for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Ryan Moss scored at both ends as Dorchester Town booked their spot in the first round of the FA Trophy with yet another victory on the road.

Saturday’s 3-1 win at fellow Blue Square Bet South outfit Weston-super-Mare was the Magpies’ fourth straight triumph away from home – and fully deserved.

Steve Devlin’s first goal of the season set the visitors on their way before the hosts were reduced to 10 men following Simon Gilbert’s second bookable offence.

loan ace Danny Ings doubled the advantage, Moss then put through his own net but the striker, despite suffering from a cold, gained redemption with a powerful finish late on.

And the Magpies, who banked £4,000 in the process, now await this morning’s draw to discover their next opponents.

Boss Ashley Vickers named an unchanged line-up from the one that dismantled Dartford the previous weekend. The only change came on the bench where Josh Ford replaced the cup-tied Jamie Mudge.

Despite the on-field continuity, the visitors were fortunate not to fall behind as early as the second minute.

Sahr Kabba put strike partner Brett Trowbridge clean through but the latter was foiled by an alert Simon Evans.

After a scrappy opening, Dorchester took the lead in fine fashion – and with their first opportunity of the afternoon.

A long clearance was cut out by Gary Bowles and directed into the path of Ings, whose clever flick set Devlin free.

Holding off the challenge of a retreating defender, the midfielder held his nerve superbly and delivered a measured chip over home keeper Lloyd Irish.

The Magpies had the Seagulls rattled and after Gilbert was booked for a late challenge on Neil Martin, they were presented with a corner midway through the half following a piece of comical defending.

Moss climbed highest from Devlin’s delivery but could not keep his header down.

Weston finally settled close to the half-hour mark and only a vital interception from Kyle Critchell halted Kabba while Nat Pepperell scuffed wide from Justin Porter’s low cross.

With the hosts now in the ascendancy, Dorchester’s backline had to be on its guard. Thankfully, centre-halves Bowles and Nathan Walker were in imperious form.

The Seagulls gave themselves a mountain to climb five minutes into the second half with Gilbert picking up his second yellow after an elbow on county town captain Mark Jermyn.

Strangely, Gilbert’s dismissal was only the second foul the home side had conceded up to that point.

And Dorchester almost made the most of their numerical advantage with Devlin turning provider for Ings.

The former’s deep corner found the latter unmarked and his fierce volley crashed against the woodwork.

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Ings did and duly got his reward in the 71st minute.

The AFC Bournemouth loanee was picked out on the edge of box by Jermyn, but saw his first attempt blocked by home skipper Craig Rand.

However, the rebound fell kindly for the lively forward and after cutting back on to his left, Ings fired home via the inside of the near post.

The 10 men of Weston were gifted a lifeline just six minutes later. Martin conceded a free-kick near the corner, Dayle Grubb delivered and Moss’ flick inadvertently flew into top corner.

The Magpies’ number nine almost made amends soon after – sliding to meet Devlin’s low centre – before spurning an even better chance to restore the two-goal cushion.

Jermyn’s initial shot was blocked by Rand and the loose ball fell straight to the feet of Moss. But he failed to get the better of Irish.

The 24-year-old was not to be denied, and after Rand’s header back lacked power, the Dorchester hitman blasted beyond the helpless gloveman to join Ings on seven for the season.

With that strike went any hope of a miraculous comeback, while the county town side ensured there was to be no repeat of last year’s exit at the hands of rivals Weymouth – a result which ultimately brought Vickers to the helm.
