Gilroy's glory

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Transfer target Dave Gilroy came back to haunt the Magpies as his double, which included a last-gasp winner, ensured Woking came out on top in this early-season basement battle.

The predatory striker was courted by Dorchester boss Ashley Vickers this summer and came close to joining the county town outfit, only to opt for a higher-paid deal with the Cards instead.

And, despite the visitors arriving late at the Avenue Stadium, forcing a 25-minute delay to kick-off, Gilroy showed the Magpies what they are missing with two well-taken efforts.

Woking were stuck in traffic on the way to Dorset, resulting in the late start, and were allowed minimal time to warm up. But after a slow beginning, they recovered to inflict a third straight defeat on the rock-bottom hosts.

Vickers made wholesale changes in the wake of last Tuesday’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Eastleigh.

Keeper Regan Coward was dropped completely, being replaced in goal by Simon Evans, while Nick Crittenden, Kevin Hill, Matt Groves and Jamie Gleeson were relegated to the bench.

In came Neil Martin, James Coutts, Dave Allen and Stuart Douglas.

Given their arduous journey, it was perhaps understandable to see the visitors make a sluggish start.

And the hosts almost capitalised after three minutes when dead-ball specialist Ryan Hill tried his luck with a 30-yard set-piece.

Ex-Chelsea keeper Lenny Pidgeley was anticipating a cross but Ryan Hill went for goal and was unlucky to see his thunderous effort crash against the top of the crossbar.

Steve Devlin then had the Woking defence on the back foot with a jinking run which ended in a shot for Mark Jermyn that flew into the body of Pidgeley.

Woking manager Graham Baker was clearly concerned with his side’s lethargic opening and made a change after just 12 minutes.

The Cards were only dealt their first opportunity midway through the half courtesy of a free-kick 25 yards out. However, Aswad Thomas’ strike was about 10 feet too high.

The same man blasted another effort wide soon after, and Alan Inns fired over from close-range, as the away side began to dust off the cobwebs.

Having failed to take advantage of their early pressure, Dorchester were suitably punished in the 35th minute with Woking bagging the opening goal.

And to add insult to injury it came from the boot of Gilroy. A deep cross from skipper Mark Ricketts was chested down beautifully by the visiting striker and he provided the finish to match with just Evans to beat.

Devlin was at the heart of all Dorchester’s endeavours but the Magpies lacked invention and were all too often reduced to the long-ball game.

Into the second half, the Magpies continued to struggle in their attempts to find a breakthrough and Vickers reacted by making a double change – bringing on Crittenden and Groves for Coutts and Douglas.

The switch breathed new life into the hosts and they found an equaliser just five minutes later.

Devlin was fouled by Darryl Hennessy just outside the right corner of the Woking box and Ryan Hill produced a superb curling effort, akin to the one he nailed against Bromley on the opening day.

The stylish goal was met with wild celebrations from the county town players, particularly the goalscorer who was subsequently booked after removing his shirt.

Dorchester could now sense an unlikely victory and they should have taken the lead in the 71st minute.

A set-piece delivery from Ryan Hill was spilt by Pidgeley but Nathan Walker, diving in, could only nod wide.

Woking’s Adam Doyle was then extremely fortunate to survive a penalty appeal after the ball clearly struck his hand. Meanwhile, Devlin tried his luck with two drives, but to no avail.

Crittenden went close as the match entered the final 10 minutes but it was the Cards who were gifted the better chances of the latter stages.

First, Jerome Maledon’s header through was completely missed by Walker, allowing Gilroy a free run at Evans’ goal.

However, the defender’s blushes were spared courtesy of a tremendous save from Evans.

But the keeper could do little to halt the Woking hit man when faced with a second one-on-one in the final minute. Toby Little was played in down the left-hand side and he pulled back for Gilroy, who tucked the ball past the oncoming Evans.

That hammer blow saw the Magpies lose their discipline somewhat as a late melee broke out in injury time, resulting in bookings for Walker, Allen and visiting substitute Craig Faulconbridge.
