Perfect response by Magpies despite defeat

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Boss Ashley Vickers felt he got the perfect response from his charges last night.

The Magpies suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of rivals Weymouth on Saturday but picked themselves up just 48 hours later to more than match Npower League One outfit AFC Bournemouth.

Last night’s Avenue Stadium encounter looked to be heading for a goalless draw, but five minutes from the end, a fine individual goal from Cherries’ winger Alex Parsons claimed the spoils.

However, Vickers was proud of his side’s display, saying: “There were huge positives to come out of the game. We pressed them and it beggars belief how we didn’t score.

“On Saturday I don’t think we gave Weymouth enough respect, but it has helped us refocus.

“We’ve drawn a line under that and I knew I would get a reaction out of the boys.

“I thought Nathan Peprah-Annan and Nathan Walker were excellent at the back, Harrison Bell came on in midfield and was great, while Rico Wilson gave as good a performance from a forward, in terms of holding the ball up and using his body strength, as I’ve seen for some time.

“I’m glad he also bounced back from his disappointment at the weekend.”

With tonight’s testimonial in mind, the Magpies rested Mark Jermyn after his injury scare at the weekend while Ben Dickenson (ankle) also sat out.

However, there was a return, albeit on the subs’ bench, for defender Gary Bowles – against the side he has recently been auditioning for.

The Cherries named Dan Thomas in goal while his loan move to the Magpies continues to stall but there was no place for former county town favourite Danny Ings.

Unsurprisingly, it was the higher-ranked outfit who tested their range first – Paddy Hester letting fly from distance but seeing his rising drive clear the bar.

Dorchester’s Steve Devlin tried his luck from a similar distance, and with an identical outcome, before Simon Evans smothered the ball at the feet of Parsons, following a superb through pass from full-back Warren Cummings.

Chris Flood fired into the side netting and Ryan Moss shot narrowly wide as the Magpies grew in confidence. But the Bournemouth pressure was beginning to build and twice they spurned decent opportunities to forge ahead.

First, Lyle Taylor could only poke wide after Evans had done well to keep out Elliot Ward’s strike, then former Dorchester loan man Jayden Stockley blazed over from 10 yards.

Thomas switched teams at the break and his new allegiance almost paid dividends, with only the linesman’s flag denying Dorchester the opening goal.

Devlin’s floated free-kick was flicked on by Nathan Walker and volleyed home by Moss. However, the forward had narrowly strayed offside and the effort was ruled out.

The Magpies continued to press and Ward was forced to clear in front of his own goal from a Nick Crittenden header.

That opportunity was created by Rico Wilson and the home striker, keen to make amends after his red card at the weekend, looked lively after coming on Moss.

Soon after, the substitute sent a header into the arms of Thomas’ replacement in the visiting goal – Jordan Seabright.

Stockley was not far away from finding the top corner with a 20-yard curler before Thomas rushed out to make life difficult for Taylor, who limped off after colliding with his club-mate.

At the other end, Seabright had to be alert to keep out a Crittenden corner which almost curled inside his near post.

The Cherries stepped up a gear in the final stages though and after Stockley nodded the wrong side of the left post, the visitors finally broke the deadlock.

Parsons worked his way to the corner of the Magpies’ box, cut inside on his left foot and found the far corner with a precise effort.

Defeat was perhaps a tad harsh on the hosts, but, in stark contrast to the defeat to the Terras, Vickers will surely have found more reasons to be cheerful.
