Jekyll and Hyde Magpies
by
Ky Capel
It was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show as Dorchester
Town went from the highs of Tuesday night to the lows of Saturday’s
poor display against Eastbourne.
The Magpies entered the Blue Square Bet South encounter in high
spirits after a 4-0 thrashing of Maidenhead United – in which
the county town outfit played the majority of the match with only
10 men.
However, the mood is a very different one ahead of tomorrow’s
trip to Hampton & Richmond as goals from Ollie Rowe, Ben Watson
and Steve Brinkhurst did the damage at the Avenue Stadium.
And boss Ashley Vickers, who had called for consistency prior to
the game, was left baffled by the vast contrast in performance levels.
He said: “It’s Jekyll and Hyde. All we’re looking
for is continuity of performances. I say it a lot but that’s
what we’re after.
“We don’t have the ability to pull in 29 to 30-year-old
players who have been there and done it, and who know the game so
well, so we have to work with the lads.
“They want to learn and they do want to be coached but it’s
so important that we carry out instructions as effectively as possible.
“We got found out by the big man (Eddie Hutchinson). He’s
very strong in the air, we asked for him to be screened and then
the lads at centre-half to come and win the ball a bit easier.
“We didn’t carry that out but by the same token we
didn’t set up around that. We started the game well but we
got pushed back and that meant our midfielders couldn’t get
close to our strikers.
“We also had our defenders in a zig-zag line with one 10
yards behind the others, and that can’t happen.
“I’m not going to point the finger at anyone because
as a back four you all have to take responsibility.
“We asked the boys to have a go in the second half and they
did, but the third goal effectively killed the game – and
it was a poor, poor goal in every way.
“We need to try and put it to bed as it was a poor performance.
No one likes to get beat 3-0 at home. It wounds people, including
myself.”
With Rico Wilson beginning a three-match ban, following a pre-season
sending off, the only change from Tuesday’s victory saw Jamie
Symes replace the former on the home bench.
Buoyed by their midweek triumph, the Magpies came out all guns
blazing in the early exchanges, creating the first real opening
after just two minutes.
However, despite rising highest at a Steve Devlin corner, Ryan
Moss was unable to direct his header goalwards.
Borough responded and only a decent save from Simon Evans denied
Watson, with Brinkhurst failing to profit on the rebound.
Watson found himself clean through once again in the 19th minute
after Eddie Hutchinson, who dominated the aerial battles, had flicked
on Rikki Banks’ goal kick. But the visiting forward could
only stab his effort into the arms of a grateful Evans.
The Magpies were on the back foot and fell behind two minutes later
as Rowe’s head connected with Matt Crabb’s set-piece.
The goal failed to spark much of a reaction from the hosts and
it was 2-0 just past the half-hour – Watson finally getting
the better of Evans after nodding home a low centre from Brinkhurst.
It should have been three on the stroke of half-time but with the
Magpies’ defence carved open, and only Evans to beat, Watson
blazed high and wide from a matter of yards.
The shot count told its own story with the visitors racking up
10 attempts at goal to Dorchester’s three.
The county town outfit began to improve on that tally as the second
period got underway with Chris Flood heading wide from a Devlin
centre and the same man seeing a free-kick, right on the edge of
the Borough box, cleared by Darren Baker in front of his own keeper.
But just as the home side were beginning to find a foothold in
the game, slack defending allowed Eastbourne to put the result beyond
all doubt.
Nathan Peprah-Annan committed a foul on the right side, picking
up a yellow card for the third game in succession, and the subsequent
set-piece was cleared by Kyle Crit- chell, but only as far as Brinkhurst.
And Sports’ winger, under no pressure whatsoever, took a
touch before finding the inside of Evans’ near post.
Borough thought they had grabbed a fourth 15 minutes from the end
but the linesman’s flag denied Watson a second goal of the
game.
Seconds after entering the fray, substitute Ryan Dovell won a free-kick
20 yards from goal, but this time Flood was off target.
Nathan Walker was then unable to generate sufficient power when
a loose ball broke his way inside the visitors’ penalty area
before a wild effort from Flood, in added time, just about encapsulated
a dismal afternoon for the home side.
And to compound the Magpies’ misery, match sponsors Hearn
Roofing, run by chairman Shaun Hearn, declared it impossible to
pick a Dorchester man of the match.
