Spitfires gun down Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

It could be yet another season of struggle for the Magpies on the evidence of last night’s defeat to Eastleigh.

Comfortably leading 1-0 at the break, Dorchester took their foot off the gas and paid the price as the Spitfires, who were devoid of any sort of attacking threat in the opening period, helped themselves to three second-half goals to clinch their first win of the new season.

The loss also prolongs the Magpies’ recent poor run against their Hampshire rivals in Blue Square Bet South. And with a trip to high-flying Truro City to come on Monday (3pm), life doesn’t get any easier for Ashley Vickers’ men.

Speaking after last night’s 3-1 reversal, the boss said: “We were 1-0 up and it perhaps should have been more at half-time. We were possibly on top in the second half as well but then we conceded some very sloppy goals and that has been the story of the season so far.

“We’ve conceded 10 goals now and I can’t remember a single one of those being a good goal.

“We were all over them but again we didn’t take our chances. That’s part and parcel of football so you have to stay solid at the back, and we didn’t.

“We got done by a couple of balls on the turn and the goals are coming from the same area as well, which is a worry, but it’s something that will be addressed.

“The goalkeeper’s starting position has also got to be sorted out because it’s appalling.”

Vickers added: “The performance itself was good. The lads give me everything and they always do. They want to do so well but things need to be addressed.

“I’ll take the rap for every loss as I pick the team but I gave the boys the opportunity to put things right from the Eastbourne game and they didn’t take it.”

The Magpies named an unchan-ged side from the one that slumped to defeat at the hands of East-bourne last Saturday. However, there was a slight tweak in defence with Kyle Critchell moving from right-back to centre-half and Nath-an Peprah-Annan going in the opposite direction.

Former county town favourite Jamie Brown lined up for the Spitfires and his hesitancy led to the home side’s first sight of goal.

Skipper Mark Jermyn robbed his ex-colleague and the Dorchester foray ended with a corner on the right side, which was delivered by Steve Devlin and headed over at the far post by Peprah-Annan.

Earlier in the move, a better choice of pass from Nick Critten-den would have put Chris Flood through on goal.

The Magpies thought they had strong claims for a penalty on the quarter-hour but rather than appease their calls for handball, referee Adam Bromley awarded a free-kick to the visitors.

The man in black became more and more prominent as the first half wore on. First he rightly dished out a yellow card to Jamie Slabber after a late challenge on Ashley Nicholls, however, he and his assistant then failed to spot an aerial assault on Crittenden, which left the Magpies’ winger with a bloody nose.

Frankie Raymond, who caught Crittenden with that flailing arm, was then caught out of position on the half-hour, allowing Flood a free run down the right flank.

Dorchester’s number 10 delivered to the near post but the onrushing Nicholls was unable to control his effort, which flew high and wide.

Eastleigh were left cursing the officials soon after as the county town outfit opened the scoring.

Devlin and Danny Smith raced towards a loose ball and went shoulder to shoulder, with the former winning the battle and the latter left in a heap on the floor.

Visiting protests fell on deaf ears and Devlin crossed for Ryan Moss to head home unchallenged.

Eastleigh keeper Gareth Barfoot then saved from Crittenden before Nicholls poked just wide of an upright in first-half stoppage time.

The Magpies continued to hold the upper hand as the second period got underway and only a vital block from Smith prevented Devlin from surely extending the home extended.

The visitors had shown a distinct lack of creativity up to this point but almost in the blink of an eye they overturned the deficit.

Richard Gillespie set Jordace Holder-Spooner free and the latter fired high into the roof of Simon Evans’ goal for the equaliser.

And it was 2-1 just five minutes later as Andrew White raced on to Slabber’s through ball, out-paced Neil Martin and then aimed for goal. The strike was straight at Evans but somehow the ball squeezed through the gloveman’s body and into the net.

It could have been even worse for the shell-shocked hosts just past the hour as only a goal-line clearance from Crittenden, following Slabber’s glancing header, prevented a third for the away side.

Moss should have restored parity, scooping the ball over the top from Flood’s cut-back, but that was as good as it got for the Magpies as Eastleigh put the game beyond reach with nine minutes remaining.

White received the ball in the box from fellow goal-scorer Holder-Spooner, and despite having Peprah-Annan for company, he was able to get a shot in on the turn and beat Evans down low.
