10-man Magpies show their mettle
by
Ky Capel
They say 10 men are invariably harder to beat than 11 – a
cliché Maidenhead United would not argue against after Dorchester
Town recorded their first win of the new season in emphatic fashion.
Boss Ashley Vickers tipped his men to bounce back immediately following
the disappointment of a 4-0 loss at Dover Athletic on the opening
day, and the 40-year-old was proved right last night as the Dorset
Magpies notched their biggest league victory since last November,
despite being a man down for 65 minutes.
Steve Devlin saw red just past the midway stage of the first half
for a dangerous challenge on Leon Soloman but his team-mates, already
a goal up thanks to a Chris Flood penalty, rallied round and ran
out deserved winners at the Avenue Stadium.
Vickers, who saw Kyle Critchell, Nathan Walker and Ryan Moss also
find the net, said afterwards: "We were positive after the
game on Saturday and we reiterated to the lads that it was important
we utilised our assets, such as our fitness.
"You have to do things at a good tempo and Phil Simkin found
out that Maidenhead struggled with that on Saturday, so we kept
on about that.
"The lads put it into practice fantastically. Losing Devs
was a blow but the lads responded superbly."
Asked for his view on Devlin's dismissal, Vickers added: "All
I want referees to do is take a bit of time. To take 20 seconds
to think about it and analyse it.
"When refs flash cards instantly it says to me they have lost
control, momentarily, of the game or that particular incident.
"Some people have said it was a red card and some have said
it wasn't. Devs and their guy were having a bit of a tussle beforehand
and I nearly mentioned it to him in the previous pattern of play.
"He's whole-hearted but whether it's a sending off I don't
know as I was the wrong side of it. And that's not me sitting on
the fence because I never sit on the fence."
One a more positive note, the triumph was the perfect way to mark
500 appearances in county town colours for skipper Mark Jermyn.
Vickers said: "What a great achievement. I believe he is playing
the best football of his career."
As expected, Vickers kept faith with the XI that started at Dover
and his faith was repaid inside five minutes as the Dorset Magpies
edged in front.
Nick Crittenden delivered from the right, Moss went down claiming
he had been pushed in the back by defender Soloman and after a moment's
thought, referee Adam Hopkins pointed to the spot.
Flood missed his last attempt from 12 yards, albeit in a pre-season
friendly, but he confidently found the bottom-right corner this
time around, sending Jordan Clement the wrong way to net Dorchester's
first goal of the season.
The visitors should have been level eight minutes later but Alex
Wall's miscue, following a dangerous cross from Anthony Thomas,
maintained the advantage.
The hosts could arguably have been awarded another spot-kick, Andrew
Fagan upending Moss with what looked a more blatant shove than the
earlier incident.
The man in black was at the centre of attention once more 25 minutes
in, sending Devlin for an early bath.
To be fair to Hopkins, the midfielder had clearly raised his studs
in a 50-50 challenge with Soloman. Nonetheless, the county town
side were forced to play more than an hour with only 10 men.
Perhaps predictably, United raised their game and saw Manny Williams
register their first attempt before a cross-cum-shot from Thomas
bounced off the top of the home crossbar with Simon Evans stranded.
Despite their numerical disadvantage the Dorset Magpies made a
positive start to the second period but their lack of personnel
meant there was no one on hand to connect with a low centre from
Moss, who displayed power and pace down the right flank.
Flood then sent a 30-yard free-kick wide of goal as the pressure
built.
And the home side got their reward on the hour with Flood delivering
a set-piece from a similar range and Critchell getting to the ball
ahead of Clement to glance home his fourth goal for the club.
Dorchester kept pushing and saw Moss denied at close-range by the
legs of the United keeper.
A rare foray from the Berkshire Magpies ended with Walker producing
a timely block to divert Max Worsfold's goalbound effort over the
top.
The home defender then showcased his talents in the opposing box
as he headed Town into a three-goal lead.
A Flood corner cleared everyone, Neil Martin picked up the scraps
and drove into the area before delivering a precise cross that was
nodded home at the back stick.
Evans had to be at his best to retain the advantage, saving one-on-one
from Wall following Williams' through pass, but the final action
belonged to Dorchester with Moss bagging a richly-deserved fourth
courtest of a diving header from Flood's injury-time corner.
