Dorchester get a real education
by
Adam Summers
Andy Harris described Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Toolstation
Western Premier Division outfit Sherborne Town as a “real
education” for some of the squad at the Avenue Stadium.
The Magpies went two down in the clash following a brace from Jack
Dalziel but fought back with a double from Steve Devlin and a strike
from Ryan Moss to ensure they ended their pre-season campaign on
a high ahead of this Saturday’s Blue Square Bet South opener
at Dover Athletic.
However, first-team coach Harris is adamant that lessons need to
be learned from the performance if the county town side are to go
on and realise their potential over the course of the forthcoming
campaign.
He said: “To coin a cliché, it was a game of two halves.
We failed to apply ourselves in the first and deservedly went two
down.
“We set out to play at a high tempo but that did not happen
and that allowed them to come on to us and we ended up paying the
price.
“Steve eventually got one back and then at the break we reiterated
to the players the importance of dictating the pace of the game
and to be fair in the second half we did exactly that and it was
somewhat comfortable in the end.
“We were a lot stronger all over the pitch and we put the
ball into the right areas, dominating both possession and territory.
“We also created a few more chances and I think the whole
exercise was a real education for some of the lads out there.
“Pre-season is all about getting ready for that first game
of the campaign and to be fair we have had to take a couple of results
on the chin.
“However, I think Saturday proved that if we apply ourselves
right and play the way we know we can we are more than a match for
anyone, and if we don’t we will struggle.
“In that respect, I think this was the perfect last game
of pre-season as it has left everyone in no doubt what is required
if we want to have a good campaign.”
Mark Jermyn was rested due to a slight hamstring problem and Moss
is struggling with a tight back but Harris believes both will be
fit for the trip to Dover.
He added: “We took Ryan off merely as a precaution and we
are confident both him and Mark will be okay for Saturday.
“Dover is a tough opening game but we certainly do not fear
them.
“Instead, we will go there and give them the utmost respect
but at the same time knowing full well we are more than capable
of getting a result.
“There can certainly be no excuses now. Everyone is fit and
sharp and now it is all about delivering the goods next weekend.”
