Super-sub Crittenden leads Magpies to Truro victory

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Nick Crittenden came off the bench to fire Dorchester Town to an impressive win at high-flying Truro City.

The county town winger was dropped in the aftermath of Friday’s loss to East-leigh but proved his worth at Treyew Road with the winning goal.

And boss Ashley Vickers paid tribute to the 32-year-old’s professionalism.

He said: “Critts hadn’t done anything wrong. I know what I will get from him, but we’ve just found it difficult to get the ball to him at times.

“No matter what age you are, you are always disappointed to be left out but he responded in exactly the right way.”

Yesterday’s victory – only the Magpies’ second of the Blue Square Bet South campaign – wrecked Truro’s 100 per cent start on home turf.

Vickers added: “It was a really good day and the boys were excellent. We changed one or two things and those that came in did well, as did those who stayed in the team.

“We could have won by more as we had two one-on-one chances that we didn’t take. However, it was an excellent performance.

“I’ve watched Truro a few times, including on Saturday when they lost at Havant & Waterlooville. Looking at the way they play I felt we had a chance against them and so it proved.

“Mark Jermyn came in at the back and defensively we were very good.

“Les Afful and Barry Hayles are a very good strike partnership but Jem and Nathan Walker handled them brilliantly.

“Simon Evans was also excellent in goal. He has had a big change in lifestyle after leaving Rushden & Diamonds and sometimes it takes a while to bed back in but he is a very good keeper and he has the bit between his teeth.”

As promised, Vickers made changes following Friday night’s disappointing display at home to the Spitfires.

In came Ryan Dovell and Ben Dickenson for their first competitive starts, with Crittenden dropping to the bench and Nathan Peprah-Annan absent from the squad altogether.

Dovell lined up in midfield, which resulted in skipper Mark Jermyn partnering Nathan Walker at the heart of the defence.

Truro meanwhile, named ex-Magpies Danny Clay and Barry McConnell in their starting XI.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half but the Magpies had their chances, the best coming from Chris Flood, who unfortunately headed wide from a Dickenson centre.

The county town outfit were though, a tad fortunate to end the half with 11 men as Dovell, already on a yellow, escaped punishment for a late challenge.

With that in mind, Vickers replaced the former Bridport ace with fit-again Jamie Gleeson – the midfield man making his first appearance of the season.

Crittenden was also later introduced and after Ryan Moss was foiled one-on-one, the visiting substitute opened the scoring from Flood's centre.

Truro huffed and puffed for an equaliser but Dorchester stood firm.

However, they were grateful to keeper Simon Evans when he made a fine save to keep out Jake Ash’s stoppage-time free-kick.

There was still time for Dorchester to put the game beyond doubt, but former Weymouth gloveman Tim Sandercombe denied Crittenden, who found himself clean through.
