Magpies pull off Weston wonder
by
Ky Capel
The Magpies staged a stunning first-half assault to pick up all
three points at the Woodspring Stadium.
Despite being without several regulars, Dorchester hit three goals
in the opening 45 minutes before staging a strong rearguard action
to protect their lead after the break.
Town boss Alan Knight made four changes to the side that started
the 6-3 home defeat against Havant & Waterlooville in their
previous outing.
A minor car crash on the way to the ground meant Alan Walker-Harris
was forced to give way to Nic Jones between the posts while Jamie
Gleeson missed out through illness and was replaced by Ryan Dovell.
Due to knocks sustained in the Dorset Senior Cup victory over Portland
United in midweek, Nick Crittenden and Rico Wilson also dropped
to the bench, handing starts to Harrison Bell and Neil Martin.
Bell began at right-back with Critchell moving into midfield where
Dovell played alongside Ashley Nicholls in the centre.
Sam Malsom partnered Tom Nichols up front while Antony Carlile
and Alex Godrey helped make up the bench.
Malsom proved too hot for Weston to handle in the opening 45 minutes
and he soon inspired the opener.
The ex-Weymouth forward, who had earlier sent a free-kick just
over the crossbar, produced a trademark run and shot on 13 minutes,
and when Lloyd Irish could only parry it out, there was Nichols
to head home the rebound.
Weston tried to respond but the visitors continued to impress and
soon added a second when Critchell fired in a splendid free-kick
from 25 yards.
The same player then nearly bagged a second with a header from
Malsom’s corner but the assistant-referee at that end deemed
the ball had not crossed the line.
After that Weston began to get into the game a little more but
on the stroke of half-time Dorchester grabbed a third.
Critchell, who was having a stormer, sent over a wonderful cross
to the near post and there was the equally impressive Malsom to
head past Irish to put the county town outfit in complete command.
Unsurprisingly, after the break Weston threw everything at Dorchester
in a desperate bid to grab a foothold in the game but the visitors
continued to stand strong.
Town skipper Mark Jermyn was fortunate to escape a second booking
after committing a late challenge before another great run and cross
from Critchell supplied the killer fourth.
This time Nichols saw his shot saved but Dovell was on hand to
scoop the loose ball in to completely kill off Weston’s hopes.
And it very nearly got even better in the closing stages when Malsom
raced on to a through ball from Nichols, only to see his little
dink stopped by the onrushing Irish.
Knight said: “Everyone did a fantastic job and we thoroughly
deserved the result.
“We knew they would throw everything at us at the start of
the second half but we stood up to the test and saw it out.
“As a unit, we defended superbly throughout and Sam and Tom
caused them no end of problems up front with their pace.
“Due to circumstances, we also played Kyle Critchell on the
right of the midfield and he was fantastic as was Ryan Dovell.
“It was just a tremendous performance all round and hopefully
this will be the start of another good run.” |
