Vickers given food for thought
by
Ky Capel
Boss Ashley Vickers was left with plenty to ponder after three county
town trialists found the net in last night’s impressive win
over a Yeovil Town XI.
Former Swindon Town youth team striker Seb Broomfield, ex-AFC Bournemouth
full-back Harrison Bell and Bridport ace Ryan Dovell all registered
at the Avenue Stadium as the Magpies, who opened the scoring through
Chris Flood, inflicted a 4-1 defeat on their more illustrious opponents.
And Vickers, who also ran the rule over Weymouth youngster Ryan
McKechnie and former Magpies Nathan Peprah-Annan, Rico Wilson and
Simon Evans, was delighted with what he saw in his side’s
opening pre-season friendly.
He said: “It was a really good performance. The lads put
everything into practice and worked very hard.
“I know Yeovil had a lot of trialists out there but you can
only beat what’s in front of you and it was a good result
for us.”
Discussing the men on trial, the county town chief added: “Seb
is only 18, he looks like he can finish and pop up at the right
time, which is something we haven’t had before.
“Rico has something special but he’s a work in progress.
Harrison was outstanding and has excellent fitness levels.
“Ryan Dovell’s very well thought of locally, he wants
to make the step up and performances like that show he can.
“Depending on Rushden’s situation we will either loan
Simon or sign him. He will come to us whatever.
“Nathan was here previously and from what I gather he has
been playing below himself of late, with all due respect to Sholing.
He wants to earn something with us and is going about it the right
way.
“Ryan McKechnie is a very fit lad and I like his attitude
as well. He has an opportunity here.”
The Huish Park hopefuls were keen to impress early on and they
almost forged ahead inside 10 minutes – Dom Blizzard’s
bullet header coming back off the crossbar.
The lower league Magpies responded though, and saw Ryan Moss go
close on two occasions.
Strike partner Flood then forced ex-county town stopper Martin
Horsell into action before Alan O’Brien spurned a glorious
chance for the Glovers – failing to beat Dan Thomas one-on-one
following a mistake by Neil Martin.
That miss proved costly as the Magpies opened the scoring in the
final minute of the half.
Moss teed up Flood with a neat back-heel and the latter found the
left corner with a superb curling effort.
Dorchester made wholesale changes at the break but were two goals
to the good when Broomfield nodded home a James Coutts set-piece.
In reply, half-time substitute Kiernan Hughes-Mason, after a fine
piece of trickery, saw a low drive palmed away by replacement keeper
Evans.
But it was the Blue Square Bet South outfit who remained on top,
and they extended their advantage with Dovell producing an almost
identical strike to Flood’s.
The League One side did manage a consolation with Rhys Kelleher
firing home, after Lewis Perkins’ initial effort was parried,
but the three-goal cushion was swiftly restored as Bell met Coutts’
left-sided corner. |
