James started his career at Bournemouth in 2004 and then spent time on loan at Grays Athletic and Weymouth. He signed permanently for Weymouth after being released by Bournemouth in 2007 and remained with his hometown club until they were relegated to the Conference South at the end of the 2008-09 season, making 73 appearances for them and scoring nine goals. Following a coaching spell in the USA, James signed for Conference South leaders Newport County in December 2009 but the spell was only brief as he returned to Dorset in January 2010 when he joined the Magpies. James is also the club's Football in the Community officer.
