As a player, Paul was an uncompromising centre half who made well over 200 professional appearances in the lower levels of the football league with Bournemouth, Aldershot, Torquay and Newport County.
He is no stranger to the non league game either though having also played for several years with Weymouth, Bashley and Bideford. It was in fact with Weymouth where he had his first taste of management towards the end of his playing career.
Paul also has management experience in the football league when he was promoted from Youth Team Manager to First Team Manager at Torquay in 1992. After narrowly missing out a Youth Development job with Southampton in 2000 he was appointed the Director of Youth Development at Swansea City a position he held until their whole management team of Colin Addison, Peter Nicholas and himself were made redundant with the Welsh side in the middle of a financial crisis and no longer able to meet the their wage commitments. After a spell at West Bromwich Albion working for Bryan Robson as youth coach he moved back to South Wales to work with Dave Jones at Cardiff City as Head of Player Recruitment.
Paul has a habit of finding and nuturing
talent who end up being sold on to bigger clubs and its hoped that
his expertise in this department along with his excellent contacts
will be a huge benefit to the club.
Paul Compton's kit for the 2007-08 season
is sponsored by Southern Sealed Units.
